With a tradition that is steeped in rich history, it’s no wonder than Tahoe Vista and the surrounding area are home to a wide variety of museums and heritage centers. Whatever it is you’d like to explore, it’s certain that Lake Tahoe has a museum that is right up your alley.
For instance, visitors and residents flock to the Gatekeeper’s Museum, which is a reconstruction of the Gatekeeper’s Cabin. The Gatekeeper was the water master that controlled the flow of water from Lake Tahoe. Museum visitors can now explore Lake Tahoe history, including the Native American history, the logging era, and the new industry of tourism. On display are Native American baskets, resort souvenirs, photographs, documents, and artifacts.
If you’re visiting the area with children under the age of seven, then you will definitely want to check out the KidZone Museum in Truckee. The museum changes its exhibits often, but the elements of every exhibit are always educational and focus on child development. Your kids can learn and play with hands-on experiences in art, science, health, history, and the environment.
If you’re interested in exploring Lake Tahoe’s maritime history, then you’ll certainly want to visit the Tahoe Maritime Museum on the West Shore of Lake Tahoe. The exhibits include photographs and artifacts from the late nineteenth century to the present, with special focus on shipping, racing, and leisure boating. There are fairly new exhibits featuring aquaplanes and water skis, which show the progress from early models to the ones we use today.
These aren’t the only museums in the area. You can visit the Thunderbird Lodge, the Emigrant Trail Museum, the Watson Cabin Museum, The Village at Northstar Sculpture Museum, and the Bolam Gallery Art Museum. There are so many possibilities for education and fun!
